Bone Marrow

Bone Marrow Aspirate:

The bone marrow aspirate in CML shows:

  • Increased cellularity.
  • Marked predominance of myelopoiesis.
  • Erythropoiesis is normal.
  • Granulopoiesis shows numerous neutrophils and band cells.
  • Eosinophils are patchily distributed and are increased in some fields.
  • There is a mild increase in metamyelocytes and the number of myelocytes, promyelocytes and blast cells are within the normal range.
  • Megakaryocytes can easily be found within the aspirate (not shown in the image provided). Many are hypolobated and micromegakaryocytes are often seen.
  • Occasional pseudo Gaucher cells are seen.

Bone Marrow Biopsy:

Bone Marrow biopsy in CML shows:

  • Increased cellularity (up to 95%).
  • The increase in neutrophils is a prominent feature.
  • No infiltrates or clusters of blast cells can be seen.
  • Some megakaryocytic clustering is seen, but it is not pronounced (not shown in the image provided).
