Exposure to certain toxic chemicals is associated with an increased risk of leukemia.

Toxin Chronic treatment with immunosuppressive drugs
 

Benzene

  • No direct evidence that there is a link to the development of ALL - but is associated with AML
Chemotherapy
Paternal chemical exposure (insecticides)
  • Not strongly linked, but ? increased risk in offspring of men exposed to agent Orange in Vietnam war.
Smoking during preconception period
  • No strong evidence to support this
