ALL is biologically heterogeneous.
May develop at any point during the multiple stages of normal lymphoid differentiation.
ALL is classified in several ways:
- Morphology - appearance
- Immunologic characteristics - cell surface protein markers
- Cytogenetic and molecular characteristics - genetic mutations
- Cytochemical (biochemical) features - staining
