Bone Marrow Transplant

Source of Stem Cells

There are three main sources of stem cells for transplant into an individual:

Bone Marrow:  This is the traditional way of obtaining HSCs - a “bone marrow transplant”.

Peripheral Blood:  HSCs also exist in small quantities in the peripheral blood.

Umbilical Cord Blood:  Contains immature HSCs that can be used for allogeneic transplant.
