Recipient Evaluation Phase
A recipient is evaluated beforehand to ensure they are suitable candidates for a HSCT and to identify any medical issues before entering into transplant.
Pre-transplant evaluations usually include:
- Complete history and physical examination.
- Evaluation of disease status (e.g. bone marrow aspirates, radiographic imaging of previous tumor sites).
- Blood work including complete blood count, electrolytes, renal function and liver function tests.
- Infectious disease serologies including CMV, EBV, HIV, HSV, VZV, Hepatitis A, B, C, Human T-cell Lymphotrophic Viruses I & II, Syphillis and West Nile Virus.
- Nuclear medicine assessment of glomerular filtration rate.
- Pulmonary function testing
- Cardiac function: Echocardiogram and 12-lead EKG.
- Audiogram
- Dental assessment
- Nutritional assessment
- Psychological assessment including formal neuropsychological evaluations when appropriate (e.g. pediatric brain tumors).
