Thoracic Surgery
Thoracic surgeons are involved in the resection of complex chest wall tumors such as Ewings sarcoma.
Below is a PET/CT scan of a teenager with Ewings sarcoma involving the chest wall (#1). Chemotherapy is given initially and would be associated with a good tumor response. Surgery however, is essential for local control. Pre-operative radiotherapy may be used if the surgeon is not sure that he/she can achieve clear margins at the time of resection. #2 shows the normal kidneys.
Sometimes pulmonary metastases from tumors such as osteogenic sarcoma are amenable to surgical resection after chemotherapy.
