Neurosurgery
Expert pediatric neurosurgeons are required for the management of pediatric brain tumors.
For many tumors (for example medulloblastoma and ependymoma) local control is improved significantly if a gross total excision can be performed.
In the brain it is impossible to achieve wide margins - obviously a wide rim of normal tissue cannot be taken with the tumor.
Sometimes also if a tumor is involving critical structures such as the brain stem or the motor strip in the cortex, resection may not be possible.
