Cytogenetics

Cytogenetics describes chromosomal abnormalities associated with specific cancers.

Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology is an essential resource and guide to the subject of cytogenetics.

Some chromosomal abnormalities are very specific for different types of cancer. The diagnosis of these tumors is confirmed by pathology and the finding of the associated translocation.

Examples of tumor types and frequently found associated chromosomal translocations:

Tumor Associated translocation
Synovial sarcoma t(X;18)(p11.2;q11.2)
Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma t(2;13)(q35;q14)
t(1;13)(p36;q14)
Myxoid liposarcoma t(12;16)(q13;p11)
Ewing sarcoma t(11;22)(q24;q12)
Desmoplastic small round cell tumor t(11;22)(p13;q11)
Clear cell sarcoma t(12;22)(q13;q12).
Alveolar soft part sarcomas t(X;17)(p11;q25)
Burkitt's lymphoma t(8;14)(q24;q32)
